Dr. Luigi Canullo named William R. Laney Award recipient

Dr. Luigi Canullo named William R. Laney Award recipient

Arlington Heights, Ill., March 15, 2019 — “As clinicians, we should stop seeing peri-implantitis as only a breakdown in the physiological homeostasis between the bacterial load and the host defenses,” said Dr. Luigi Canullo DMD, PhD, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon from Rome, Italy said as a summary of his research for which he received the 2018 William R. Laney Award today at the Academy of Osseointegration’s (AO) 34th Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.

Named after AO’s first president and former editor of the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants (JOMI), William R. Laney, DMD, MS, the award recognizes the best article published in the past year in the official publication of AO, in which Dr. Laney serves as Editor Emeritus. Dr. Canullo’s research entitled, “Association Between Clinical and Microbiologic Cluster Profiles and Peri-implantitis,” was published in Volume 32, Issue 5, 2017.

The aim of Dr. Canullo’s research was to investigate the association between the clinical and microbiological profiles and peri-implantitis to eventually categorize different groups of this disease. Subjects with at least one implant presenting signs of peri-implantitis and one implant in healthy condition were selected. The clinical, radiographic, occlusal and microbiological profiles of these infected implants were collected.

According to Dr. Canullo, cases were classified into five peri-implantitis groups according to potential disease triggering factors: surgically-, prosthetically-, biomechanically-, purely plaque-associated and a combination of these. Generalized estimating equations models were used to study differences among the potential risk factors. Cluster analyses were applied to investigate the correlation between clinical and microbiological profiles and diseased implant samples.

At the end of the study, 55 patients with 110 diseased and 121 healthy implants were included. Cluster analyses demonstrated a significant ability to predict the associated factor of peri-implantitis: the biomechanically-associated group showed higher levels of microbiological contamination inside the connection, however the plaque-associated group had higher level of microbial variety in the peri-implant sulcus.

In conclusion, Dr. Canullo stated while peri-implantitis represents a plaque-induced inflammatory condition, certain local factors might be associated with this biological complication as they imply plaque retention. Therefore, disease classification could be further implemented with the associated surgical, prosthetic, and biomechanical factors to better target the etiology.

As a result of his award-winning research, Dr. Canullo will be provided the opportunity to present his work at the Clinical Innovations Session during AO’s 2019 Annual Meeting.

“As an Italian, I scientifically grew in the European environment which is strict and conservative. Being part of this great Association (AO) gave me the opportunity to face a more flexible perspective. Both standpoints help me to have a more complete scientific approach,” said Dr. Canullo.

Recipients of this annual award are selected by a group of peers who serve on AO’s William R. Laney Committee. Members of this committee reviewed nearly 140 articles when considering this year’s recipient.

“I consider the William R. Laney Award one of the most important scientific prizes worldwide. And given the very controversial topic of the selected study, I was even more thrilled. In fact, the study developed the scientific background to categorize peri-implantitis in four subgroups, aspect which seems to be very far away from the traditional vision of the disease. Recognition of such an important Academy means that it is still possible to go upstream,” concluded Dr. Canullo.

“Without the support of Profs. Miguel and David Peñarrocha from the University of Valencia, Prof. Hom- Lay Wang and Dr. Alberto Monje from the University of Michigan, and Prof. Andres Catena from the University of Granada, this work would not have been possible.”
